Art, like a good story, appeals to us as it takes us to wander in wonder. It gives us the chance to see, feel and explore through the eyes of an observant artist, who peels through the literal and aptly paints the unspoken and the abstract of the world. Art possesses the ability to evoke strong reactions from its viewers, as connection is often visceral rather than factual. At times, we may not be able to fully articulate our response but we “get” the artist and his artwork; his story. It playfully weaves our thinking and analysis with emotions and subconscious, and that is usually one journey rarely achieved through other means.
Together with a captivating narration, the sweet spot of an artwork also requires carefully formed composition as well as a display of the artist’s masterful technique. This deliberate creative process would result in a sincere artwork, but it is not necessarily pleasing to the common eye – the ugly could be just as compelling especially when it is intended to shock and throw the viewer off guard.
Humans that we are however, we have an inherent bias for the pretty. Here lies yet another challenge – could the artist create an artwork that completely mesmerises its audience; one that remains sincere to its story, yet at the same time fulfils the viewers’ aesthetic needs? Isn’t it particularly commendable then when this is achieved - when the artwork not only portrays everything that is beautiful but also invites the audience to see vivaciousness even in the most mundane of subject matters? Isn’t it remarkable when the artwork portrays a fresh outlook to the real and the familiar? Wouldn’t that be simply brilliant?
To usher in the year 2012, Galeri Chandan invites you to embark on a whimsical journey through the poetic lenses of Rafiee Abdul Ghani during his recent travel to India. Go along with the well-travelled artist; let him be your guide through his Perfumed Gardens and simply let yourself free to bathe in the fascinating narratives and the vivid spectrum of colours on feature.
You may well remember one other solo art exhibition titled Rainbow Warrior by the same artist in 2009, also held at this gallery. Indeed, it is an honour to host the Perfumed Gardens and how fitting to greet the coming year with a celebration of the artistic journey of a talented Malaysian artist. We look forward to a blessed, eventful year ahead and may the future be as vibrant as the artworks on display.
